So I’m sitting home last night and my wife likes to watch the show “Big Love,” which is about a polygamist who has three wives and the various problems associated with having multiple households.
I used to like to watch it too, but it’s gotten to the point where everybody on the show is so absolutely miserable and terrified, it’s just horrible. It kind of actually freaks me out. I just don’t wanna see it—I can go to the mall if I want to see that stuff! So instead, I got on the Internet, just looking at random shit. Of course, soon I found myself on the Apple home page because I like to look at shiny things.
And, right there, I saw a link to a news story talking about how, according to their fancily prepared documents, Apple boasted the most profits ever during this past quarter. They had over $15 million in revenue and a net quarterly profit of well over $3 billion—making Apple now a $50 billion company. Now I thought this was really interesting because the news everywhere is telling us that retail is down, everything is horrible, and no one’s got any friggin’ money.
But Apple is different.
Of course, this leads to the question: what do they know that everyone else doesn’t? What are they doing that other people aren’t doing? So I don’t really know the full answer to this question, but I thought it might be interesting to start out this month’s newsletter by breaking down some of the things they’re doing that have likely helped make that happen.
For starters, they’re damn good at really delivering happiness to people. Apple’s products just make people really happy. What’s especially interesting about this to me is that I would put all of Apple’s products, maybe with the exception of some of their computers (although this is even borderline),in the category of optional, unnecessary expenditures. You don’t really need an iPod. Nor do you really need iTunes or the new MacBook Air.You might say you need the Air, but most people could just go out and buy a cheap computer that has the basic functioning.
Now, I’m not saying that optional purchases are the way to go, but it’s just more testament to the fact that Apple is clearly doing something right during a time when
allegedly no one’s got any money.Apple just had their most profitable quarter in the history of their very long and profitable history of selling stuff that people don’t really friggin’ need!
